Macos – How to prevent the dock from switching monitors in macOS Catalina or Big Sur

In Mavericks, Apple introduced a "feature" where if you hover at the bottom of any screen the dock pops up on that screen.

This is disrupting my workflow as I am constantly having the dock pop up when I don't want it to and then I have to go to another window and hover at the bottom for several seconds to get it to go away so I can click on what I was trying to in the first place.

I don't want the dock to move; I want it to stay on the bottom of my right-most monitor like it always has. How can I adjust this in macOS Catalina (10.15) or Big Sur (11.0)?

This is very easy.

Go to System Preferences > Mission Control, then deselect the option "Displays have separate Spaces"

To do this you must temporarily disable some of the system's best protections against malware, so to play it safe, first make sure your machine is free of malware, disconnected from any network, and that you have a good (tested) full-system backup.

Next, disable System Integrity Protection:

Reboot in Recovery Mode by holding down ⌘+R at boot.
Once you are fully in Recovery Mode, run Terminal by selecting it from the Utilities menu in the menubar.
In Terminal, enter csrutil disable.
Reboot back into a normal boot.

Once you have disabled System Integrity Protection and rebooted, you can remount the boot volume read-write with this command:

sudo mount -uw /

Now you can make the desired changes.

Finally, Don't Forget! Re-enable System Integrity Protection:

Reboot in Recovery Mode by holding down ⌘+R at boot.
Once you are fully in Recovery Mode, run Terminal by selecting it from the Utilities menu in the menubar.
In Terminal, enter csrutil enable.
Reboot back into a normal boot.

Note that the sudo mount -uw / is not persistent across reboots, so you don't need to explicitly undo it. The reboots you did to re-enable SIP already caused the root filesystem to get remount read-only again.

I just upgraded to Catalina and ran into this problem. To fix it, it went into System Preferences > AppleID (Top right hand corner) > the left panel, click on Overview > There, it should say you need to link your AppleID once you've done that, it will ask you to enable two factor authentication. Once I did that, the red badge for system preferences went away.
