Mac – How to turn off MagSafe light

When I go to sleep at night, the two green lights (emitting from both sides of the MagSafe connector of my 13" MacBook Air's power adaptor) light up my whole room.

How do I turn these off?

I currently just cover it with clothes, but doing so is difficult & ineffective because I keep my laptop on a stand. Maybe I can construct a sort of mini sleeve that goes around the connector to cover the light.

I don't want to disconnect it because I don't shut it down and prefer to only discharge it once/month for optimum battery health. I guess I could shut it down every night and then remove the power cord.

I prefer the iPhone charger because it doesn't emit any light.

Unfortunately there is no way of doing this. They are controlled by a tiny chip that is located in the tip of the plug that controls the status LED.

cut the wire of the LED (will void the warranty!) or use some masking tape on the LED.

Here's my theory. The magsafe connector, head-on, looks like this: [**.**] What I write as "*" looks like an electrical contact. It really only needs to connect two things (the "+" and "-", possibly ground too). To allow you to plug it in either way, it must be designed symmetrically. So for example it could be wired so that the two external contacts are connected to "-", and the two internal ones to "+".

Now, contacts can get damaged over time. What might have happened is that, say, the magsafe's rightmost contact does not work anymore. So you have something like [**.*.]. By sheer bad luck, it might be that the corresponding contact on the laptop side also does not work anymore.

So when you plug it one way, the leftmost outer contact works and does the job. When you plug it the other way, each side has a broken contact and so the circuit cannot complete.

edit: checked the actual wiring, and it is indeed symmetrical as I describe.
