Linux – Ping Ubuntu by hostname in a Windows machine

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a Virtual Machine (Virtualbox). The network adapter is attached using bridged adapter.

I can ping the guest OS by IP but I can't ping it via hostname.

I already installed Samba and winbind. I also edited /etc/nsswitch.conf to and 'wins'.

Does the settings takes time to take into effect? What other things can I try to be able to ping the Ubuntu OS by hostname?

Not sure why Ubuntu is different but this works with debian:

Install debian using bridged networking

Install Samba

As soon as Samba is installed and running the guest machine can be pinged by hostname. I'm using a Windows 7 host and a Debian 7 LXDE guest.

The new guest VM that you created is not resolved by the other host machines in the network. You can try below solution.

Case 1:

Trying to connect to guest machine from a different host machine [say windows] in the network

open the file

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Add the following Entry

ipaddressofguest  hostname

Save the entry

From the windows host ping hostname [You will be able to connect to guest OS]

Case 2:

Trying to connect to guest machine from a different host machine [say Linux] in the network

open the file

/etc/hosts

ipaddressofguest  hostname

Save the entry

From the Linux host ping/ssh using hostname [You will be able to connect to guest OS]

So, it turns out that one of the methods of setting up a samba share (I can't find the link now) was telling my to setup a static IP address inside the VM for my host-only connection.

I just read another article that suggested that I use DHCP. I reset the connection to DHCP and then I was able to ping my host-only ethernet adapter from windows to my VM. Then after a little bit of tweaking I was able to setup the samba share.

I don't really understand why that did not work (with the static IP address), but just happy that DHCP fixed it!
