Linux – Kali Linux – Displays -> Could not get screen information

I just recently installed Kali Linux about a week ago to dual boot alongside my Linux Mint. I have been using Linux Mint for about two years now, but I am new to Kali Linux.

The first day I played around in the Kali Linux Settings and changed the orientation of my monitors because when I first booted in the orientation had my secondary monitor on the right side BUT I have two monitors: my main monitor is in front of me and my secondary is to my left. So I opened the Display settings and switched them around no problem.

After installing nvidia drivers following the guide from:

after the reboot, my monitors swapped back to having my secondary monitor on the right of me. When I opened the display settings to change this back it displays the following:

"Could not get screen information"

Can anyone help me to get this working again?

It works now, I heard there was an update on September 13th, 2016 (https:// www.kali.org/news/azure-marketplace-weekly-iso-builds/) for Kali Linux so I just ran:

apt-get dist-upgrade

it installed a lot of new updates, I followed it by:

apt-get update

just for good measure, and after a system reboot everything was working fine again; display settings is able to get screen information on connected monitors now.

Run sudo nvida-settings and click on "Save to X configuration file":

If that doesn't work, try the following:

First, generate a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf using the nvidia utility:
```
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig
```
Your current xorg.conf (if you have one) will be saved as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfig-original
Now, set everything up as you want it with nvidia-settings and save to xorg.conf as in the screenshots above:
```
$ sudo nvidia-settings
```
Make sure you change something, otherwise nvidia-settings won't allow you to save your changes.
At this point, you should have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with a line like this in Section "Screen":
```
Option         "metamodes" "CRT: 1440x900 +1600+0, DFP: 1600x900 +0+0"
```
The details will be different but what this line means is that the CRT (VGA) monitor has a resolution of 1440x900 and a horizontal offset of +1600. In other words, it is to the right of my laptop's (DFP) monitor.
Remove all offset values (+1600+0 and +0+0 above) from that line and set the screen position like so (you can also use the offsets but I find this clearer):
```
Option         "metamodes" "CRT: 1440x900, DFP: 1600x900"
Option         "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"
```
The TwinViewOrientation option sets the position of your secondary monitor with respect to your primary one. You can use RightOf, LeftOf, Above, Below, and Clone
Finally, save the file and log out/log back in.

How to fix “The display settings could not be saved” message with Oculus Rift

The trick, as suggested in a comment on this page, turned out to be to lower the resolution of both the MBP and the DK2. I set the MBP to 1920x1200 and the DK2 to 1600x900 and applied that change. Then I was able to set the MBP as the primary monitor and apply that successfully. After that I set both devices back to their native resolution again.

Interestingly enough, now the machine is back in the state it used to be in where I can freely switch the primary display back and forth between the MBP and DK2.
