Linux – In GNOME is there a way to focus/activate a window on mouse over

I recall a partner in a CS class who changed my setup to focus a window on mouse over and that was really handy for programming with a ton of terminals open.

I've seen Dwell Click under accessibility options, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I know that sometimes the GUI control applets have features undisabled that don't really do anything (i.e. WINS) if you don't have the right stuff installed.

How do I get mouse over pretty much just simulate clicking the window.

(Using Fedora 14 with GNOME)

Just deleted my main answer as I misunderstood your question the first few times through. It's called "Raise selected windows after an interval" in System/Preferences/windows, but raising only on title bar is not implemented to my knowledge(I could be wrong)

If you had more of a registry hack in mind...

Windows does support focus-follows-mouse, though there is no GUI configuration exposing it. Instead you must edit a registry key and then log out and back in for the change to become effective. You can use regedit to edit the key.

On Windows 2000, XP, or 2003, you need to change a binary-valued registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\UserPreferencesMask

This is a little-endian bitmask. For focus-follows-mouse, add the flag 0x1. For example, my XP SP2 laptop originally had a value of 9E 3E 05 80, which is 0x80053E9E. To activate focus-follows-mouse I changed to 0x80053E9F, or 9F 3E 05 80 in regedit.

According to http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/18/ you can also achieve raise-on-focus by adding the flag 0x40.

For instance some of the things I use it for:

I have a Logitech Marathon mouse which is great because it has hyperscrolling and the batteries last 2 years but in Chrome for some reason when the hyper wheel is spinning, sometimes it can zoom your pages when you press CTRL. This happens a lot. So with this app I disable ctrl-mouse wheel when chrome is being used. Something that cannot be done by chrome itself
- I set it up to alt-wheel up/down control the system volume. Quite useful
- I configured alt-left click to take a screen shot of the active window, alt-right click for a full screenshot
- I set 'Alt' key to activate 'Layer 2' (Settings > Modifier Keys), then on 'Default' profile in the Layer 2 I set Wheel Up/Down to scroll Window Left/Right respectively.
