Linux – How to create an open smb share on a Windows 7 box

I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium if that matters) box witch I want to set up a SMB share on for a network media player to play videos from. Ideally I would like this to be open so it can be copied into from any computer on the network (both MacOS and Linux).

Following this http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/ I've chosen the option to "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders.". However when I try to write to smb://winbox/videos/ (assuming that is the Public Video folder) on Linux it gives me a Permission denied (Linux can read the files).

One thing the guide you linked to forgot to mention was permissions on the shared folder. Right click the folder you're sharing, then go to:

Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing > Permissions > Add > "Anonymous Logon" > Check Names > OK > Check Full Control > Apply > OK > Apply > OK > Close.

This is due to your Samba configuration. What you want is to set the file masks, so that when Samba creates or modifies a file, the permissions are kept at a known quantity.

This is what I use in my /etc/samba/smb.conf. These options are set explicitly for each share:

[sharename]
    ...
    directory mask = 0755
    create mask = 0644
    ...

See the Samba smb.conf documentation for the create mask and directory mask options. Use security mask if you want to mask ACLs as well.

It seems that under Ubuntu, the user public folders in Ubuntu may be controlled by the [public] share definition.

Macos – OSX (Yosemite) file permissions on files written to SMB-shares

If the share is managed via the Server app, enable ACL's on the server, and configure the share through the Server app adding a group that all the team members are in and giving them read/write access.

I had a similar problem in the past and chmod/chown/chgrp simply didn't cut it.

edit: Forgot to mention you'll also need to enable inheritance permissions when setting this so that when new files are created, the same permissions are enabled on these files/folders.
