Linux – Access a remote Windows shared folder from Linux Mint

I am a Windows intermediate user and I have recently installed Linux Mint 13 Maya 32-bit version on my laptop. Earlier my major activities in my Windows box were:

Connecting to internet, wifi, VPN etcetera
Doing RDC
Accessing shared folders.

I am able to achieve the first 2 things. The last one, I am puzzled as how to access a Windows shared folder from my Linux Mint laptop.

Note: There is no Virtual box here. My laptop has only Linux mint. I am just trying to access a remote windows shared folder.

In windows I used to do this.

Goto run and type the command
 \\<system name>

Here, how can I do that? Any simple way or tools?

Assuming your network is properly configured, you should be able to just click on the server name from your file manager:

In the best case scenario, roperly configured" just means you have run this command:

sudo apt-get install cifs-utils

I have done some research and this article looks the most promising. I've copied the relevant part over.

Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options". Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Apply the settings.

In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try:

-Enable network discovery
-Turn on file and print sharing
-Turn off password protected sharing
-Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption.

Please check related policies.

Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box.

Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.

In the right pane, enable the following policies:

Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users

Also please disable the following policies.

Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares

Linux – Unable to access samba shared folder on Windows 7

The solution for the poster was by changing the LAN Manager authentication level to Send NTLMv2 response only from Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.

Apparently Samba mismanaged the session security negotiations with Windows, so they couldn't agree on the algorithm for passwords. Once the poster dictated the security method, things worked.

As to why this happened - the best answer I can come up with is that it was caused by some unknown incompatibility between the Linux and Windows implementations of the SMB protocol

Try this on the W7 client :

In the Local Group Policy Editor, go to:

Local Computer Policy->Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options

Find the policy named Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always).

If this is Enabled, change it to Disabled. Be sure and restart your computer for the change to take effect, as pressing Apply in the Policy Editor is not sufficient.

As a side-note, I used the following settings the last time I externalized a Samba share. Try them, and if they solve the problem then modify them one-by-one to yours until you encounter the problem:

path = /my/share/path
available = yes
browsable = yes
public = yes
read only = no
writable = yes
