I need to leave my laptop on for around 8 hours so I can control it with TeamViewer when needed. It would not be in any kind of sleep mode, like if I sat there moving the mouse around every 3 seconds to keep it on. I do not have to worry about keeping it on though, because a TeamViewer connection prevents it from going to sleep.
If I left my computer on for that long without the picture on the monitor changing would it cause any damage?
I think the hard drives don't support Windows 7's new Power Management settings.
I'm getting regular Blue Screens of Happiness whenever I try to "wake up" my E-Sata external hard drive. I installed the newest Intel Raid drivers (which I hope contain some updated drivers) and it's better now, but still not perfect.
The default Power Management options in Windows 7 Beta turns off the Hard Disk after 20mins. This could cause problems when the PC comes out of sleep mode or hibernation. To work around the problem set the Power Options for the Hrd Disk to never turn off. To do this
- Click Start – Control Panel – System and Security – Power Options
- Click “Change Plan Settings” on the “Balanced (recomended)”
- Click “Change Advanced power settings”
- Under the “Turn Off Hard Disk after” option change the timing to “0″ which should set it to Never. Click Apply and OK.

To find the list of hardware IDs for a given device, follow these steps:
Open Device Manager.
Find the device in the tree.
Right-click the device and select Properties.
Select the Details tab.
In the Property drop-down, select Hardware Ids or Compatible Ids.
You device should be in the Device Manager tree under "Mice and other pointing devices".
If you wish to track changes, you could use devcon:
DevCon (Devcon.exe), the Device Console, is a command-line tool that displays detailed information about devices on computers running Windows. You can use DevCon to enable, disable, install, configure, and remove devices.
The command to use is DevCon HwIDs that displays the hardware IDs, compatible IDs, and device instance IDs of the specified devices.
Its syntax is:
devcon hwids {* | ID [ID ...] | =class [ID [ID ...]]}
where ID Specifies one or more devices by using an hardware ID or part of a hardware ID. This way, if there is a common part to all the IDs that are assigned to the devices, you could query on this part.
If you wish to call devcon from a batch file and append its answer to a text file, execute it immediately after wake.

The easiest way to solve this (and to put your mind at ease) is to set a screen timeout of 10 minutes. This action does not suspend the machine. When it is not in use, it will go out. I do this with my equipment here.
