How do I type backtick (i.e. `) on a Windows 8 touch keyboard?
This is a similar question to How do I type the tick and backtick characters on Windows? but the answer there covers real physical keyboard configurations while I need the Windows 8 virtual screen keyboard.

You could just use the Character Map program, built into Windows. It lists all characters for each font installed on the system, and lets you select one and copy it to the clipboard. In fact, I use it to reference all the keycodes to type them, otherwise, but when I'm on my laptop, it's handy just to be able to copy the characters from that program.
It's available in the Accessories start group, or by running charmap.exe.
You can copy U+200B like so:

For On-Screen Keyboard go to Control Panel -> Ease of Access -> Ease of Access Center -> Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard and uncheck Use On-Screen Keyboard (if checked). Also check if the Windows + Volume Up key do something. It could be set to On-Screen keyboard in Ease of Access Center -> Make touch tablets easier to use.
For TabTip keyboard, you can remove it by removing any shortcut for it from taskbar ( right click -> toolbars -> Touch Keyboard) and then killing process by typing this in cmd:
taskkill /F /IM TabTip*
(You could also consider putting this command into a batch file and executing it at startup as windows 8 restarts TabTip processes if it finds a touch input device, though it doesn't come forward on its own)

The default touch keyboard in Windows 8 is quite simple and destined to be used on small screens.
The article How to Make the Standard Keyboard Layout Available in Windows 8 Touch Keyboard describes how to replace it by the full keyboard.
To add the standard keyboard layout to touch keyboard in Windows 8 :
On Windows 8.1, this setting has migrated to PC Settings -> PC and devices -> Typing.
