GRUB Rescue – How to Restore MBR and Boot Windows 7

I have a dualboot system with ubuntu and windows 7, I wanted to remove ubuntu so I removed the linux partition from disk management from windows, after reboot I'm stuck in GRUB rescue. How to boot into windows?

First boot on your Windows Vista/7/8 installation DVD.

If you have one of the many OEM computers that didn't come with a Windows installation disk, you can get the same effect with a Windows repair disk, which you can download (eg Win7-32bit, Win7 64bit) or create from another Windows Vista/7/8 computer. When you get to the Regional settings, select your Location/Keyboard setting then click next. On the next page, click on "Repair your computer." On the next page, if it finds your Windows installation, make sure it is UNSELECTED before clicking next. Then click on "Command prompt". From there, type in the following 2 commands:

bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

When GRUB is gone, so is the ability to boot into Windows. You would now need to boot from the Windows CD to restore the Master Boot Record (MBR). You can also use other boot CDs such as the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, Bart PE or Hiren's Boot CD in case you don't have Windows installation media handy. Here are the steps:

Boot from the Windows CD and choose "Repair". Alternatively, boot from one of the other aforementioned boot CDs and run a command prompt.

For Windows 8 computers:

1. Insert disc
2. set boot order to disc at first priority
3. reboot, wait for installer to load
4. select language and keyboard type and click continue

Run the the following two commands in a command prompt:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
```

You have deleted the partition where grub was installed.

1) In case you want to install Ubuntu again you can proceed with a regular installation

2) If you want to keep just windows , you can boot your windows using this [you might need to use hd0,2 depending on where you have installed windows]

grub>root (hd0,1)
grub>chainloader +1
grub>boot

go into recovery mode and use "fixmbr" command to rewrite the boot sector
