I'm not sure if I like the whole idea of Start screen yet, but I would find it more useful with Stack Overflow as a tile in the group.
Is there a way to add the Stack Exchange sites to this screen and if so how?
My default web browser is Chrome.

Official answer (as per MS docs) to the general query "Can you access the Metro version of a non-default browser in Windows 8?"
Short answer: As per Microsoft's guidelines, only the default browser can access/participate in the "Metro style experience". So this behaviour is clearly intentional and unless Microsoft changes its guidelines or a browser-maker flouts them or some sort of hack is created, we're stuck with it.

Suppose Firefox Nightly is set as the default browser. Go to Control Panel / Programs / Default Programs / Set Default Programs / (Firefox) Nightly / Choose defaults for this program:

Yes, this is possible with custom Windows shortcuts.
Create two shortcuts for Chrome named Chrome Desktop and Chrome Metro.
Enter the following flags for the shortcuts.
--force-desktop for Chrome Desktop and --force-immersive for Chrome Metro
In case you don't know how to add flags in shortcuts, refer to this image where the --incognito flag is added:
Now just keep the Chrome Desktop shortcut on your desktop and Chrome Metro shortcut in the folder: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\. The shortcut should appear in your Start Menu after a few seconds.
Keep in mind that you cannot have both modes open simultaneously at the same time.
Edit: I double checked this on my friend's system. It seems that after you close Chrome from metro mode, it doesn't exit. Instead, it stays in the background (application is suspended - it is by design of Windows 8.x). Refer to this article to find out how to close applications permanently.

The only way that I can think of is by using a app called OblyTile.

What you want to do is create a tile that opens up Chrome or whichever browser you want to use but in this example I will use Chrome. Once you have found the file path for Chrome, in the arguments section below it you might want to use "--homepage http://stackoverflow.com" so that when you open the tile it opens up StackOverflow. (Someone can feel free to correct me on this)
