How to make Microsoft Word citations hyperlinks

So for cross references (to tables, figures, etc) Word will make the reference link to the spot in the document that contains the caption like you expect but it seems for citations it doesn't do this. You can't ctrl+click them to go to their location which is odd. Is there anyway to change their behavior that clicking on them links to their position in the generated References page?

Short answer is "no."

It is precisely because the Reference page is automatically generated that this functionality is not available. (For the same reason that outline headers don't hyperlink back to the generated Table of Contents.) (Conceivably, I suppose, citations on the reference page could link back to where they are cited in the document, but of course this would be problematic due to the 1-n nature of citations.)

What is it that you are trying to accomplish? You realize, I'm sure, that you can edit the citations right on the page, right?

The Word built-in reference tool has a style called "IEEE" which has similar citations except that the number is not in superscript. IEEE format

Inorder to make the citation in superscript, you should modify the style file which is in the %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Bibliography\Style folder.
Back up the IEEE2006OfficeOnline.xsl file, and find the string <xsl:template name="Citation">.
In this segment, you can find <body> and </body>, change these to <body><xsl:element name="sup"> and </xsl:element></body>.

If that is the case, then you can insert a citation field manually as follows. Let's say the tag name is Doc14

Use ctrl-F9 (or cmd-F9 or fn-cmd-F9 on Mac, depending on your keyboard setup) to insert a pair of the special field code braces, so you see

{  }

Between the braces, type "CITATION " followed by the tag name, so you end up with

{ CITATION Doc14 }

Select the field, and press F9 to update it.

NB, this is is not quite the same way that Word uses to insert a CITATION field. Word inserts something called an "sdt", which contains a { CITATION } field but which arguably makes it harder to modify the field.
