I bought a Dell Inspiron (which runs Windows 7) and they seem to have done something to the brightness controls because it seems to be more coarse than I remember from my previous HP Pavilion (EDIT: yep. I can only change the brightness in jumps of 6). I wish to get a better control of the screen brightness to tune it to the specific sweet spot I'm interested in.
The model is N5110.
Is there a program or setting that can do this for me?

In Windows operating systems, brightness controls are implemented in the operating system-supplied monitor driver, Monitor.sys. The monitor driver implements a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interface to let applications—such as the operating system’s brightness slider—interact with the brightness level.
The monitor driver registers with the operating system device power policy so that brightness levels respond to changes in power policy. The monitor driver registers for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) notifications to process ACPI-based brightness shortcut keys.
An OEM can implement brightness control by using function shortcut keys such as Fn-F6 or Fn-F7.
Try rolling back the display driver to the previous version.
Control Panel
> Device Manager (opens a window)
> Display Adaptors
> Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 (double-click)
> Driver (tab)
> Roll Back Driver.
It worked for me.

If it is a Inspiron 1564 or similar chassis there is nothing you can do about it. If not try from the advanced power settings for the profile you are using.
