Thunderbird – How to Disable Notifications

I run Ubuntu Hardy and Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (not tagging for linux/ubuntu since I think is a Thunderbird thing, but you can re-tag if appropriate).

I am really tired of the email notifications, which appear in the right bottom corner of the desktop, often (but not always) covering the desktop switch panel, which I often need to click right when the notification appears (and instead I click the notification by mistake and I become very angry!)

Is there a way to disable the notifications altogether? I don't care about them, in my workflow I just switch to Thunderbird every once in a while when I have a minute or two to read/reply the emails (of course I've searched and RTFM, without any success)

Edit -> Preferences -> General -> "When new messages arrive:"

Unchecking the "Show an alert"-Box should do the trick.

It seems that notify-osd is the new Ubuntu notification daemon which can't do what I want, and notification-daemon is the one I need, the one which was the default in previous Ubuntu versions like Hardy. Here is how to install it and make it the default on Ubuntu Lucid:

$ sudo apt-get install notification-daemon
$ sudo perl -pi -e 's@^Exec=.*@Exec=/usr/lib/notification-daemon/notification-daemon@' /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service
$ sudo killall notify-osd

Optional:

$ sudo rm -f /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service.*

Now this works as intended:

$ notify-send -t 0 foo

To revert the changes run:

$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall notify-osd

Linux – Thunderbird, chat extension, what about notification

FiltaQuilla is an add-on that enables the user to properly and precisely configure notifications, based on built-in filters or enhanced filters. Maybe one could try to extend its functionality to filter/notify chat messages. I don't have a full answer here, but it might be a good start. I would not be surprised if the developer of this add-on would make something for chat.
