There is an old trick to make fonts smoother on Ubuntu (and pretty much every distro running Gnome):
Open up .fonts.conf under your home directory (~/.fonts.conf) and paste this in:

gfx.direct2d.disabled, and change its value toTrue.
This turns off hardware acceleration and should make your fonts more readable.

gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_modeChange its value (probably -1) to 1
1 turns anti-aliasing off.
You might also want to try 2 and 3.
4 and 5 are not your friends, they involve anti-aliasing.
