Is it possible to change the resolution of the viewer specified during starting of the vnc server with the geometry command line argument? I have a vncserver configured for a wide screen monitor but I want to view it on a 1024×768 screen.

The UltraVNC viewer supports auto scaling, so it will resize the viewing window automatically, to display the whole screen of the remote server.

I found that x11vnc can do what I wanted to do for option (1). Just specify a scale by running:

x11vnc -scale 1/2

or something like that.

On my Ubuntu server, it wasn't working either with the -randr parameter, but it works great by using several times the -geometry parameter. Give it a try.

So you would enter:

vncserver -geometry 1600x1200 -geometry 1440x900 -geometry 1024x768

And after, you use the xrandr command to change the resolution.
