I know I can always click on them one at a time, but that is very time consuming. I can rope select many cells at a time, but if there are pictures in the spreadsheet, it will ignore the pictures. Is there any way to change the selection mode in Excel so that picture can be selected via the rope method?

In Excel, go to Insert > Picture > From file... and type the URL of the picture you want to insert. I don't know if the picture updates itself since I've never tried it.
Sounds like you're trying to copy data from one Excel "instance" to another. Are you clicking the Excel application from the start menu to open up a new workbook?
When you open Excel in a new instance and try copying from one instance and paste special into another, I get this dialogue:

Try this:
- Open your workbook to copy
- In Excel, click File (Or Office Button), New -> Create new blank workbook
- Copy your data from the original workbook
- Go to the new workbook (in the same Excel instance) and right-click -> Paste Special
The menu should come up correctly

On the Home Tab, go to Find and Select, Select Objects, your cross pointer becomes an arrow and you can now rope select.
Repeat the steps to get back to your normal pointer (it will get majorly confusing for most users since you cannot select cells anymore).
