Excel – How to enable the ‘Save and Open’ option in Internet Explorer

I've recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 11 and when I try to download/open a *.csv file I get the following options in IE. The Save and Open option is greyed out.

Is there a setting I can change to allow me to save and open these files? Excel docs (xlsx) open immediately without any clicking.

Try adding the problem website to the Compatibility View List. This worked for me.

In IE click "Tools" -> "Compatibility Settings" and enter in the problem website address.

You can add websites to the Compatibility View List via group policy too. It should be noted that websites added via group policy do not show up in the Compatibility View List on the client browser (at least from what I can tell).

Computer or User Configuration-> Policies-> Administrative Templates-> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Compatibility View

Opening Excel spreadsheets in IE doesn't get you the same functionality and menu structure as in Excel, but is possible.

Getting this to work requires registry hacks. If you intend to go this way, better create first a system restore point just in case.

Excel – IE9 not prompting to save downloaded CSV file, opens in Excel

First option which I'm sure you've tried, is to right click the download link and click Save Target As... Depending on how the website is set up, that will allow you to save the file without opening it, or it will do nothing helpful.

Second option, is to enable download prompting, which you should be able to disable after downloading if you don't like it. I don't have internet explorer 9 anymore so I can't test this but, you should be able to:

In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
There are four security zones listed:
- Internet
- Local intranet
- Trusted sites
- Restricted sites
Click the zone where you want to change the settings.
Under Security level for this zone, click Custom Level.
Under Downloads, under Automatic prompting for file downloads, click Enable, and then click OK two times.

This should make the Open or Save dialog pop up when you click the download link. From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883255
