save the file containing your udf as an addin (File/save as/addin (xla) ), then add a reference to it (tools/addins/browse to your file)
Disable document inspector in the Trust Center.
Note: picture may not be exact as I use Office 2010.
Step by step instructions (for 2007):

- Trust Center
- Trust Center Settings...
- Uncheck Remove personal information from file properties on save
- OK

Go to Options (under main menu) --> Save --> uncheck "Save AutoRecover information every ___ minutes"
