Excel – Add Baseline to simple Excel chart

chartsmicrosoft excelmicrosoft-excel-2013

I have a simple Excel spreadsheet tracking weight loss. I have a column with dates and another with weights. I made a simple chart with both columns as data sources (dates are x, weight is y). That worked great. I want to add a baseline so the user can see how close they are to their target weight.

I've tried adding another column with the target weight, repeated it all the way down and added it as a data source, but it doesn't work. It doesn't display the baseline. All it does is change the chart's range from about 10 below all the minimum weight to zero (which is worse).

Is there (1) an easy way to add a baseline to a chart and (2) not have it change the chart minimum to zero?

Not sure exactly how your data is laid out, so this is kind of a general answer.

You need to change the series chart type to for the baseline you are trying to create. To do this, right click the baseline series in the chart and select "Change Series Chart Type".

Then select the first "Line" chart option. Click OK.

You can adjust the chart minimum by right clicking a grid line of the chart and choosing Format Axis.
