How can I disable that annoying buzzer sound in OSX Lion that I get when, for example, I'm at the terminal and press delete on an empty line?

I tried to modify the sound settings by unchecking "Play user interface sound effects" but it didn't work.

Well, almost. What you want to disable is the "Alert sound", or an audible bell. You can disable it by turning down the Alert volume.

defaults is the command used to read/write preferences from the command line.

Try quitting and reopening Finder.

There is a bug where files that no longer exist are still shown on the desktop (but not if you open a separate window for ~/Desktop/). It has happened to me with .download bundles and with temporary files created by ImageMagick. The files have always disappeared after I have quit and reopened Finder.
