Windows – Convert PDF and Word documents to TIFF images

On Windows 7, how could I go about creating a TIFF image from a) MS Word documents, and b) PDF documents? I need the equivalent of printing out and scanning the document, so I can mimic signing the document and scanning it using a graphics editor.

My preferred graphics editors are Paint.NET for raster and Expression Design for vector. I know the main document is raster, but I could do my signature in vector and add it as a layer in Expression I hope.

If you have existing PDFs, ImageMagick can convert them to image formats like TIFF.

You can try ImageMagick. I'm trying this on Linux, but it's available for Windows as well. I just have to type: convert example.tiff example.pdf and I get a PDF. With just a little batch magic, you should be able to easily convert a directory of tiff files to pdf.

Or, if you need all tiffs in the same PDF, you can do convert example1.tiff example2.tiff example.pdf.

Creating and splitting large multipage TIFF images

I had the same problem today while trying to split a 1700 image, 1G tif file. 16G of memory wasn't enough, then tried having it cache on disk, but that was slow and it easily exhausted more than 100G on the hard drive without accomplishing anything (this was probably a bug).

But apparently ImageMagick can extract a specific tif from the original file without loading it completely, so was able to split the bigger file with a simple bash script:

subfiles=$(identify -quiet -format '%n\n' largefile.tif | head -n1)
for (( i = 0; i < subfiles; i++ )); do
    convert largefile.tif[$i] -scene 1 split/smallerfile_$i.tif
done

No idea though how to create a big file without running out of memory, so maybe this is half an answer?
