I have run through the clearing process several times and cannot find even the tiniest scrap but the screen still says there is a jam and it won't change. Do I just throw it at the wall and buy another one?

had the same problem and fixed it myself. The problem om my CP1525nw was the rubber on paper pickup roller.
Use the following procedure to rotate the roller into the position required to remove it:
- Open the Secondary Service menu by pressing and holding both the Left arrow and the Cancel button simultaneously.
- Use the arrow buttons to select Pick roller, and then press the OK button.
- Press the OK button again to confirm that you want the pick roller to rotate.
- Turn the power off (by taking out the power cord!).
- Release the two plastic locking tabs and remove the pickup roller.
You can either replace the complete paper pickup roller or change the rubber on the roller. To change the rubber,
- Release the small lock in the U-shape that is holding the rubber on the wheel.
- Rotate the rubber band 180 degrees so that the used part is put in the U-shape and the unused part is on the wheel.
- Put the lock in the U-Shape and put the roller back in the printer.
That fixed the issue!
You can also order a spare part of the paper pickup roller. Partnumber is CC430-67901. Also check the CP1520 Service Manual for more details.
Hope this helps!
The problem is likely that the Brother Feeder Cam Lever (part LY2579001
) is either broken or slipped out of position. One user reported it's possible to fix without disassembly):
This is small plastic piece that is used to lift/lower a gear in order to start and stop the feeder rollers. This lever can come out of position such that it can no longer wedge beneath the gear, and instead pushes against the side of the gear. Thus, the feeder rollers will no longer work.
I was able to fix this for a little while without disassembly. Later the same problem happened. I removed one screw and a side panel to expose the cam. Sure enough, it was broken. See this video which shows how to access the Feeder Cam for Brother printers MFC-7360, DCP-7055.
I found a replacement Brother Feeder Cam Lever (part LY2579001
) on Amazon for $5.95 which should keep the printer running.

My model is different, but maybe my remedy can give you and others inspiration.
I had the same kind of problem with a Brother MFC-6710DW, only three years old and not using it daily. After many hours cleaning the outside and inside of the printer, the real solution for me was: cleaning the little plastic rolls (12!) behind/under the bigger and long grey rough metallic roll behind the print head. This is where the paper passes just before it's getting printed.
It's not easy to clean them because the little rolls move backwards when you touch them. I used a rounded kind of screwdriver covered with a damp cloth, trying to avoid to scratch them. You can roll the rolls by rolling the big grey roll.
The little rolls (especially the middle ones) were partly covered with paper fibres. I cleaned them a bit (took a long time), I certainly didn't succeed to remove all the white dirt. Immediately after cleaning the error did not disappear. But after 24 hours (let's call it: dry time): tadaa, no error message!
After letting the machine clean the print head the printer worked as before.
