Kubuntu – Fix Bash Shortcuts Not Working in Konsole

I switched from Ubuntu to Kubuntu recently and I noticed that terminal behavior is weird. For example, Alt+backspace bash shortcut does not work as expected. It is supposed to remove from the character until the start of the word. Instead, terminal enters into some weird mode when I cannot delete characters with a Backspace. Additionally, Alt+F bash shortcut does not work as expected (moving cursor one word forward) while Alt+B (moving cursor one word back) works fine. That's just some portion of weirdness I noticed, but it is enough to make my work in the terminal a little bit uncomfortable compared to Ubuntu.

Note that I am using bash terminal:

$> ls -l /proc/$$/exe
/proc/7362/exe -> /usr/bin/bash

Can you hint at how could I achieve normal behavior of the terminal in Konsole (21.12.3) on Kubuntu (22.04)?

I switched to zsh. That fixed the problem.

Simplest way:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get --purge remove kubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get autoremove

Here is a good place to research this kind of switch.

ubuntu-desktop (jaunty) and kubuntu-desktop (jaunty) are meta-packages that will reference all of the packages needed to run their respective desktop environment (including default applications).

When it gets to the point of installing gdm (gnome display manager) it will require some input from you. If you're plan is to remove KDE and KDM for good then let it switch your default display manager to be GDM.

By using the --purge flag you are removing all configurations for that package so any future install of it you will be starting from scratch. As was pointed out in a comment using the autoremove is how you tell apt to remove all orphaned packages that would have depended on the kubuntu-desktop and that should get rid of most (if not all) kde/kubuntu desktop apps.

The only difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu is that Ubuntu uses Unity as the Desktop Environment and Kubuntu uses KDE. Linux allows the user to choose which Desktop Environment to use, you can install Unity or Cinnamon or LXDE or whatever you want on your Kubuntu.

That said, yes indeed KDE (which is what you are using) offers workspaces. You should be able to control their behavior by going into the settings app (or running systemsettings from a terminal) and then

systemsettings -> workspace behavior -> virtual desktops
