Automatically saving files on edit with kate or any text editor

When I try to edit a file in a remote directory (through SSH, SFTP or FTP) I must close the file to get a dialog box tell me if I want to upload the file. I want to upload it automatically on save!

I've already used Konqueror/Dolphin/Krusader as file managers and many other text editors but without any success. It seems that the problem is in the KIOExec application.

How can I edit KIOExec to automatic upload files on save? I don't want to return to using Gnome!

Although this is a somewhat old question it still is unanswered. I also wanted to:

open Dolphin/Konqueror with sftp://user@remotesite/
choose to open a file to edit
have upload on save working

As described by the original poster, the upload only happens after closing the editor.

The only way to have something similar to this working is using kate and opening the file from kate. Stating the sftp://user@remotesite/filetoedit on open.

Here the upload on save works.

After the open with menu on dolphin updated to have kate, the open with kate also had the upload on save. Before, when manually stating kate in open with other it did not work.

P.S. I'm using kubuntu 11.10 with packages updated today.

You can use rsub and rmate to edit remote files in your local Sublime Text over ssh.

You need to

install the rsub package in Sublime Text (with Package Manager)
forward port 52698 via ssh, use ssh -R 52698:localhost:52698 ... or set your config
- create/edit ~/.ssh/config and chmod 600 ~/.ssh/config (to avoid a permissions problem)
- add (replace SERVERNAME with your server, you can also use *):

Host SERVERNAME
  RemoteForward 52698 127.0.0.1:52698

connect to your server with ssh
install the rsub script on the remote machine:

sudo wget -O /usr/local/bin/rsub https://raw.github.com/aurora/rmate/master/rmate
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/rsub

Then you can do rsub file in the ssh session and it will open file in your local ST editor.

Works with ST2/ST3 and you can also sudo rsub file!

lftp 4.6.1 and newer should be able to do this: https://github.com/lavv17/lftp/issues/104

Unfortunately, the command suggested in the linked issue does not work, but a slightly-modified one does:

lftp -p $port sftp://$user:$pass@$host -e "put /dev/stdin -o $filename"

Due to a bug, you must provide something in the password field if you use a SSH agent. But any random string will do.

This command reads from /dev/stdin. If you must use a different named pipe, I imagine that should work too - if not, you can always cat named-pipe | lftp ....

I've tested lftp with a >100GB upload without any issues.

rclone also supports SFTP, and should be able to upload from a piped input with the rcat command, due to be released in 1.38 (next version).
