Which is the best application bandwidth monitor for my windows machine?

Some programs lurking in the background seems to pull up all the bandwidth and constraints my browsing experience. Are there programs to figure out bandwidth usage and show me a graph like output?

I am looking for OSS/freeware

Edit: I am looking for something that segregates bandwidth usage executable-wise and not as a sum of all the usage

In Windows 7 (and apparently Server 2008 and maybe Vista?), use "Resource Monitor". It's under Accessories > System Tools. The network tab shows network usage by process.

On Windows 8, you can find the Open Resource Monitor option at the bottom of the Performance tab in Task Manager.

If you aren't against buying hardware -- you could purchase a DD-WRT compatable router (Such as a Linksys WRT54GL) and install the Gargoyle Router firmware which can do per-ip monitoring internally, and would not be reliant on any one PC being online and available. If you don't care about per-ip, DD-WRT or Tomato firmware can both do total usage, and even cap your usage for you so you dotn get overbilled.

If you have a SNMP enabled switch and a PC that is on all the time you could log bandwidth usage per switch port with something such as Cacti (or RRDTool)

If you have a spare PC around, IPTables as a router + RRDTool can provide bandwidth logs.

Linux – How do determine how much bandwidth a process is using in Linux

You can use

iptraf

iftop -P

to identify connections that consume much of your bandwidth. A connection is identified by a pair of (localip:port, remoteip:port). You can then use

netstat -tunp

to look up what process uses that connection. Mostly however, you will be able to tell what service is responsible only by looking at the port, e.g. if the connection uses localip:80 on the local side its probably your webserver ;-)
