I installed sql server 2008 R2 Express successfully, then realised I need to get Full Text Search. So I downloaded the "Advanced Services Installation Package", but when I run it there is no option in the "Feature Selection" part for Full Text Search. Please don't tell me I hav to uninstall and reinstall?

You will not be able manage Full Text Catalogs via SSMS.

- You cannot update the full-text catalog by using SSMSE. You can use sqlcmd utility or Windows Scheduler to update the full-text catalog.
I finally found the cause of my problem!
I tried for months to track down the issue, but finally gave up, disabled automatic change tracking, just manually initiated incremental population and moved on with my life.
Meanwhile, there had been another nagging error that I was having trouble tracking down. Periodically the website would throw a DB connection error:
Cannot open database "XXXX" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'XXXX'.
It turned out that both of these problems had the same solution. All I had to do is turn off a database setting called Auto Close. To do this, just right-click the database and click properties. In the properties window select Options and set "Auto Close" to false.
As soon as I disabled Auto Close, my DB login issues went away and the automatic change tracking worked perfectly.

No, unfortunately you'll have to install a new instance with the Advanced Services installation. In R2 you can only add features such as Full Text Search if you initially installed with the advanced services installation.
You could backup your database though and restore it to the new installation w/ Full Text Search. Or I think also detach/attach.
