Oracle – Duplicate Database with No Archived Logs

duplicationoracleoracle-11g-r2recovery

I am trying to perform a duplicate operation from one server to another (testing disaster recovery) on oracle 11g. I am very much still learning about Oracle.

The system is not in production, it is just the development of a prototype, therefore we have no need for archive logs / redo logs so these are disabled, which I think is confusing matters.

I tried running the following operation from RMAN:

DUPLICATE DATABASE TO RON
NOREDO
BACKUP LOCATION 'F:\2014_08_12'
NOFILENAMECHECK;

And everything appeared to be going fine, however after some time (maybe half an hour) the duplication failed. I think this is the important error message:

ORA-39700: database must be opened with UPGRADE option

I then tried a few other things after some googling:

SQL> startup upgrade;
ORA-01081: cannot start already-running ORACLE - shut it down first
SQL> shutdown immediate;
ORA-01109: database not open

Database dismounted.
ORACLE instance shut down.
SQL> startup upgrade;
ORACLE instance started.

…and now I am at a dead end. Can anyone help?

Best Answer

Two things:

1) Are the Oracle binaries identical between the two databases? That message typically appears when you go from, say 11.0 to 11.2 binaries, and the catalog needs updated. The platforms need to be the same as well (Linux/Windows don't mix).

2) If you are trying to clone a database that is open, and you don't have archived logs, you will fail with a media recovery error. The database being cloned must be closed, or you must have archived logs. It wasn't clear in your question if it was closed or not.
