Windows – Magic Keyboard + Windows 10 — disable fn lock

I have used an apple wireless keyboard (not the "magic" variety) for some years on my windows 10 running on a macbook pro. I upgraded to the Magic Keyboard and I am seeing a strange behavior.

In windows fn + left/right arrow is the equivalent of the home and end respectively. Additionally, if I do that same combination but add shift, so, fn + shift + left/right arrow, I can highlight the entire line. Very handy!

On the new Magic Keyboard, when I do fn + shift (with or without arrow keys), it locks the shift and it acts as if it is being held down until I press shift again. In fact, this works with control/command as well.

Does anyone know how to disable this functionality? I think this is maybe called fn lock but googling it so far has been unfruitful.

So, I couldn't tell you why or how, but I downloaded this software:

After installing it, this "feature" went away and the fn key no longer caused other modifier keys to become sticky. Downside is there's a yearly fee for this software, so if anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them!

The Mac won't do key combinations across keyboards, even with an Apple external and a MacBook Pro internal.

I know of no utility to allow this, either.

Since it works in Safe Mode (based on your comment) we know it's definitely a software issue.

Basically, when you boot into Safe Mode your Mac will check the startup disk, only load necessary kernel extensions, and disable third-party fonts and startup options. Put simply, it won’t load third-party hardware drivers or startup programs.

It's likely (although not certain) that something to do with your prior installation of Karabiner is causing the problem. Your question didn't specify what version of Karabiner you had installed (besides the fact you also tried Karabiner Elements) or how you removed it. Assuming you've removed and deleted the application itself, there may still be other files installed. I would do the following:

Check the top level 'Library' folder of your hard disk for anything that looks like it's associated with your Karabiner installation. In particular, look at the following locations:

/Library
/Library/Caches
/Library/Preferences
/Library/Application Support
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/PreferencePanes
/Library/StartupItems

If you find anything, delete the files.

Now, also do the same thing with the same set of folders within your User's Library folder. To access this, within the Finder click on the Go menu while holding the Option key and select Library.
