Why has AirPlay to Apple TV stopped working from 3rd-party apps

I have been using AirPlay to stream stuff to my Apple TV for months, and it's been great. In the last week or so it stopped working for 3rd-party apps.

I use Radium on my Mac. This used to work fine but now when I unmute Apple TV it mutes itself again as soon as it starts to play.
I use the Digitally Imported app on my iPhone. I used to be able to stream this to Apple TV but now when I choose it it stops playing.

In both cases Apple TV shows up as a potential output device, and disappears and reappears as it should when I switch AirPlay off and on again on my Apple TV. I've tried 2 different routers and both wired and wireless connections. There is nothing relevant in the Console logs on my Mac that I can see.

The odd thing is that iTunes on my Mac can still play to it, and AirPlay mirroring works fine too, so it does seem to only affect 3rd-party applications.

How do I fix this?

The recent 5.1 software update to Apple TV seems to have fixed it.

AirPlay is the killer feature for Apple TV. But perhaps we’d better keep that in the future tense for now: it’s going to be the killer feature for Apple TV. After installing today’s various software updates for iOS devices, the only apps I’ve seen where AirPlay works for video are the built-in iPod app (a.k.a. “Video” on the iPad and iPod Touch) and YouTube. In other apps, AirPlay is audio-only.

Does AirPlay mirroring have any restrictions

There are restrictions on Airplay in Mountain Lion. It has to do with your video card that comes on the machines that you are using.

Your video card has to be powerful enough to do all the heavy lifting of streaming so that your CPU is unhindered and therefor you can smoothly still use your machine.

Here is the excert from the article showing the compatible computers:

iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

As for a Mac Pro, they are not listed as a compatible model that supports Airplay Mirroring, as discussed in this article here.

You can still connect a cable and mirror in that sense, that has not changed in ML. The mirroring feature of using a separate display is a completely different process than Airplay Mirroring.
