Display BezelUI with Bash or AppleScript on Mac

Long story short, I've written a simple BASH script to control the brightness of a non-Apple external monitor using ddcctl. It works, with a couple hacks.

It would be really cool if I could display a notification when the script is called, so the end user can be aware what the current setting is relative to min/max. I just found out about AppleScript's display notification function, which is cool—but the notifications don't go away on their own. I also found this essay on BezelServices, which is also neat—but I'm trying to do simple scripting, not creating an entire application.

As a generality, without a third party program, such as Growl, there is no built in way to do this.

However, you could write a script or other program such as one I found here that provides the menulet service for you. I'm sure that Growl integration would be much easier to accomplish.

You cannot open a .scpt file with any editor! It is a compiled version of the script, not text, and it will not open with any editor.

Case in point, here is what happens when I try to view the file in Terminal...

OSX comes with osadecompile that will extract the source code of a compiled script .scpt file.

Here is an example...

$ osadecompile args2.scpt 
on run argv
    set argc to 0
    try
        set argc to (count of argv)
    end try
    display dialog ("Argument Count: " & argc as string)
end run
