I use Hazel to sort and rename files. I would like to use Hazel to automatically convert Word docs to PDF. I think this best way to do this is with AppleScript. I have searched extensively online, but have been unable to find an AppleScript that works for me.
Does any have an AppleScript that will simple convert the Word file (doc and docx) to PDF? Or is there an alternative way to do it with Hazel?
NOTE : the below instructions are for Macs running 10.4 or earlier, no longer works on 10.5 (Leopard), 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
Open Automator.
Create a new custom workflow.
From the Actions panel library, select Files & Folders then double-click Get Specified Finder Items.
Add the items you wish to convert.
Next, from the library, select Documents, then double click Convert Format of Word Documents.
From the dropdown menu, select the format you wish to convert the files to. In our case we select Portable Document Format (PDF)
Now we are ready to run the action.
Click the run button in the top right of the automator window.
Open up your destination folder and verify your files have been successfully converted.
I think I should add that right now, for macOS, you can get this to work if you do Save As > PDF and then select Best for electronic distribution and accessibility.
Result:
The option Best for printing does not produce the table of content in the PDF.

You would need to have Word running, however, for this to work. It's not my code but I just tried it out as a service in Automator with 10.9 and Office 2011 and it works both with a single and multiple Word docs.
I suppose using the actual Word app is the only way to ensure correct layout but using a command-line Word-to-PDF converter could be done, too.
