Terminal – Turn Off Default New Window on Startup

Whenever I open the terminal a new window automatically opens up, I'd like to turn it off so that when I open the terminal I don't get a window and have to manually choose one from the shell menu.

The reason is that I'm opening a 3rd party application which opens an REPL in the terminal, and thus when the app opens the terminal I get two windows, one is the REPL which I want, and the other is another default window which I don't.

In Terminal's General preferences, go to profiles and create a new profile (let's call it "exit"), then under the Shell tab check the "Run command" option and enter "exit" with Run inside shell checked and "When the shell exits" set to "Close the window."

Then under General preferences, under "On startup" simply choose your new "exit" profile. This will still briefly open a window, but there's no way to have Terminal on launch do absolutely nothing.

You could simply use MacVIM to handle this. When you install MacVIM it should give you an option to install the command line shortcuts.

Then, in your Terminal, simply use mvim instead of vi:

mvim /path/to/your/file.txt

Or, if you are super lazy, add this to your ~/.profile:

alias vi=mvim

This also allows you to associate text files with MacVIM in finder, so you always get the right application for your files, weather you open them in the GUI or not.

Here's what happened. On the machines I was trying to reach (10.x.y.182 and 10.x.y.194), in the time when I was not using them they had their hard disks replaced and the OS reinstalled. This gave them new SSH keys, invalidating the ones I had in my ~/.ssh/known_hosts file. Unfortunately, Terminal.app did not surface this problem to me.

By deleting the entries for those machines in ~/.ssh/known_hosts, I forced the system to pull down the new keys and ask me if I wanted to use them. With this done, connections worked perfectly as usual. Oddly, however, even before I changed ~/.ssh/known_hosts, connections using the DNS name of the machine (svr10 and svr20) worked. Weird.
