Printing to a Local Printer While Using VPN

I use Cisco's AnyConnect VPN client for Mac to access my work network from home. While using the VPN I am unable to connect to my home printer. Is there any way around this? Is it possible to add my home printer while using VPN?

This largely depends upon the settings that your network administrator has set up for your VPN connection.

It is possible for them to require that all traffic travel through the VPN tunnel, at which point, no, you will not be able to connect to a networked printer in your home.

It is also possible for them to allow traffic that is not bound for your organization, to be transmitted outside the VPN tunnel, at which point you should be able to access your network print and other network resources in your home.

I would check with your network administrator on this... he/she will be best able to help you out.

I know that this is an old post, but I have been trying to read a .vpn file as well and none of the posted solutions worked for me. The recommended software were not able to read the file.

In case other people have the same issue, I got it by installing the shrewsoft-vpn-client. Since it is not that straightforward, I am putting the steps I did.

Install home-brew and run
```
brew cask install tuntap
```

Note: To install and/or use tuntap you may need to enable its kernel extension in System Preferences → Security & Privacy → General

Download the file shrewsoft-vpn-client.rb from Github

run

brew install --build-from-source /path_to/shrewsoft-vpn-client.rb --without-gui
sudo /usr/local/sbin/iked

Copy the file file.vpn into .ike/sites without extensions
```
cp /path_to/file.vpn ~/.ike/sites/file
```
Then, start the VPN by running
```
ikec -r file
c
```

VPN Passthrough problems with Airport Extreme

The problem was that the Airport Extreme router was configured to use the same range of IP addresses as the VPN, so while I was able to connect to the VPN there was some issues when trying to SSH into some of the servers where there was an IP conflict. It is possible to change the "IPv4 DHCP Range" in the advanced network options of the Airport Extreme which solved my issue.
