Pokemon Uranium and Winetricks Problem

I am using a Macbook Pro Version 10.10.2, and I have OSX Yosemite. I've been trying for hours to get Wine, and I downloaded the 1.6.1 version of Wine. Then, on the Windows file, Pokemon Uranium Beta 4.0.msi, I right clicked the file and opened it with Wine. Then I followed the instructions How to run Uranium on Mac OS X

And I did everything except for the 6th instruction, because I couldn't find d3dx9_36, directplay, and directmusic on Winetricks. So with just until the fifth instruction, I launched the game.

And it worked just fine, but at the part where there is a problem in the power room, and the Mum says "What's happening…?", the game starts freezing for a few seconds and then it says,

Program Uranium.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I clicked for the details so I can mention the details in the post, but Wine just quits and I can't view the details. Is there any way I could fix this? Or, is there a problem with Wine that I can't find d3dx9_36, directplay, and directmusic on Winetricks?

You have to go into the winetricks menu from the dropdown menu on the taskbar, and it should all be there. If its not there, you should try deleting your copy of wine and reinstalling the latest version.

Evidently, you're unfamiliar with Steam. I don't know what your definition of "big games" is, but in my mind Civilization V, Counter-Strike, Assassin's Creed 2, etc. qualify. Best part about Steam is that if you buy a game, you can download it for Windows and/or Macintosh.

Yes, if you want to play Windows PC games the best option is to use Boot Camp. And yes, you have to buy Windows to install in Boot Camp. Of course, if you were to purchase a Windows PC you would also have to buy Windows.

So, I'm not sure what you expect here… Apple should throw in a copy of Windows for free? Apple should spend money and resources to incorporate Wine or Cider into the OS and go through the tremendous support and legal headache while simultaneously cutting its developers off at the knees by allowing Windows applications to flood the ecosystem? — not that it would ever happen… ;)

Apple's last OS update, 10.6 was a $30 upgrade. 10.7 Lion will also be a $30 upgrade. Seems to me your beef should be with Microsoft's pricing of Windows. (Oh, and lazy/cheap game developers of course. heh.)

To answer the central question: Wine and Cider are both legal, since they use no code or binary data from Microsoft's implementation of Windows.

How to go about making a stand alone app on the dock to open a game using a terminal command

create the following plain text file:

#!/bin/bash
cd /Users/Max/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Electronic\ Arts/Dead\ Space/
exec wine Dead\ Space.exe

save it as dead_space.command

in Terminal, change it to an executabe:

sudo chmod +rx dead_space.command

Now, the file dead_space.command should start your game when you double click on it.
