I wiped my Macbook Air 2014 and reinstalled Catalina. I sold it to a guy on swappa who returned it saying it was in an infinite boot loop. I thought that I would be able to easily fix this. But when I got the MBA back, I immediately went into recovery mode and tried to reinstall macOS. A quick trip to the disk utility made me realise that the ssd is not registering. I would appreciate anyone's help with this.Could I potentially boot from a usb?

It doesn't work
My Pentalobe and Torx bits arrived today and I tried swapping the drives. When I put the 256 GB drive in my Macbook Pro, it doesn't boot and displays this image
I tried holding down opt to boot to a usb drive and do a fresh install of Mavericks on the drive.
When I attempt to boot from the USB drive, the crossed out circle image is displayed again.
I've also tried holding down shift during boot to boot into safe mode. The neutral gray screen displays for a longer time, but eventually the crossed out circle appears again.
Many things can cause a boot-looping device.
Try these things (if you haven't already) to see if anything helps:
- Try a hard reset (Home & Power button for 10 secs)
- Use a genuine Apple Lightning connector
- Use a genuine Apple charging brick and let it charge overnight
- Try to connect it to different computers (mac/pc if possible) with an updated iTunes
- Put the phone in recovery mode (search DFU Mode). Careful, this can reset your data
- Use 3uTools for putting it in and out of Recovery Mode
- Use 3uTools to flash the firmware (you can't downgrade)
If you are comfortable opening your device (now that it's out of warranty) then consider the following:
- Disconnect the Front Camera Ribbon from the logic board and reboot your phone
- Disconnect the screen assembly completely and see if iTunes will recognize the phone.
Otherwise, you may have a logic board issue. If you are uncomfortable doing these steps, consider either doing an OOW replacement at Apple or finding a reputable, independent repair shop to do the troubleshooting. A shop that also does micro-soldering can go deeper if the problem is not modular in nature.

If the SSD is not showing up in Disk Utility then it is likely that the SSD has failed or the hardware that supports the SSD has failed. The failure is likely coincidental to the OS reinstall and sale, but it can't be ruled out that the purchaser did something to the Mac. What that might be I couldn't tell you.
Realistically the only way to diagnose this is to open it up, preferably by a certified Mac tech, and see what is going on.
You are probably looking at having to replace the SSD (I think this Mac has a removable SSD) in your Mac.
