Sometimes on my Macbook Pro when I have a lot of icons in the menu bar, if I start an application which has a lot of menu items, some of these icons get automatically obscured by the menu items.
For example, when running iTunes, the Twitter icon gets obscured…
…but if I switch to Finder (which has a fewer menu items) the icon then re-appears
Is there any way I can show or get to these obscured icons without having to switch to an application with a shorter menu bar?
You can use Bartender to hide status menu items and menu extras.
Many applications have options to disable opening them at login or to hide the status menu items. You can also remove login items from System Preferences.
Use the Accessibility Inspector, accessible from Xcode → Open Developer Tool → Accessibility Inspector.
Click "Show" on the "Hierarchy" sub-section (which will show you the Application Name).
Click on the "Target Icon" at the top of the Inspector (Labeled: Start inspection follows point).
Hover over the item and the pane may show you enough information for you to determine what it is. For example, hovering the Dropbox menu bar item shows "Dropbox <version>" under AXHelp, and hovering Little Snitch shows "Little Snitch Agent" under AXTitle.
