Using OSX 10.8.5, I recently attached a second display to my 2013 Mac Air via the Thunderbolt port. Since removing this display I can now drag Finder and other windows under the menu bar. They pop back into viewable space on release, but this is visually annoying. How do I get the standard 'solid' menu bar behaviour back?
I have tried switching resolution but this doesn't work.
There's a solution that I've found which should solve this issue with any application that you encounter this with.
Dim when inactive 
I've been using this application for ages, and without a doubt it's one of my favorites.
I have had the same problem with Maverick (in clamshell mode) / external monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 2443) when I lock my screen and use my bluetooth mouse or keyboard to wake up the computer.
I was able to fix the problem in 2 ways:
open the lid, login and unplu, replug the external monitor (pretty annoying) when the multicolor static shows, press CTRL+SHIFT+Eject as if to lock the computer again, then wake up the computer again and I now have the normal login screen as normal (not ideal but less disruptive solution).

Possible fix: edit the icon shortcuts in menu bar top right. For example
Sys Prefs > Date & Time > Show date in menu bar(toggle it on/off). This seems to force the menu bar to refresh and fix the problem.
