I'm using a Macbook Pro and I just upgraded to Mac Sierra. I wanted to see if there was a keyboard shortcut for accessing my Desktop (and the icons that are on it) so I read this article — http://www.noproblemmac.com/blog/2015/05/21/how-to-always-get-to-your-macs-desktop/ , and tried the shortcuts provided. Specifically, Fn + F11 or Command + F3 (Mission control key?) but neither combination works.
How do I enable keyboard shortcuts for the desktop or what are the proper key sto press?
Go to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Then, on the left side, select Exposé & Spaces. On the right side you will see the current keyboard shortcuts for Exposé and Spaces. If you double click on the shortcut command (literally double click ^1 for instance) you will be able to change this to whatever you want. Just do the key-combo you want to use.
So, once you double-click on the shortcut, it'll show it as editable. Then, press the keys you want the short cut to be, all at once, for instance press Apple and J at the same time, and it'll change the shortcut.
You can disable the keyboard shortcuts for slow-motion effects by following these instructions:
Open Terminal.
Open the plist file in your user's library preferences folder that contains the setting by typing open ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist and hit return.
A window similar to this will open in Xcode:
For items 34, 35, and 37, set enabled to NO.
Close the file, click Save if prompted, and restart your system.

Note: 34 and 35 may not be present in the plist if you have never opened the Mission Control preferences pane and changed the "Mission Control" or "Application windows" settings. If 37 isn't present either, simply add it yourself.

Whether or not you should use the Fn key depends on whether you have enabled "Use F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys" in Keyboard preferences. Try just pressing F11, without pressing Fn. And then look in the Mission Control system preference pane and see what key is assigned to Show Desktop.
