MacOS – Why does Safari freeze on YouTube HTML5 videos

I'm in YouTube HTML5 trial, and the experience is terrible with Safari.
Every video is lagging severely, and the browser gets unresponsive constantly.

I have zero problems with the Flash version, and Chrome handles HTML5 YouTube just fine.

Activity Monitor says QTKitServer – Safari Web Content grabs more than 100% CPU.
Can I fix this?

I have 17-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 with 8 GB of RAM.

I had a similar problem with my Safari. I went into /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and removed the two piece of Flash cruft (regretfully I'm at work, so I don't the exact file names.) After a reboot, Safari worked much better, as did Chrome. Not sure why Chrome improved, but it improved most of all.

Incidentally, I thought I was on a Flash free system previously, so I'm not sure how those bits got there. If I need Flash, I just go to Develop -> Open Page With -> Chrome (you need to enable the Developer Menu, under Advanced in Preferences.)

Sometimes a good place to look is the syslog. If you know it's every 10 seconds then there's a chance that a message will get logged for whatever is happening. Try this in terminal and append the results to your question or even have a look yourself for anything that looks unusual which is happening on 10 second intervals.

tail -n 20 /var/log/system.log

This sounds like a problem with the Flash player. you can edit the flash player's settings by going to: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html

In the section "Website Storage Settings", increasing the amount of data youtube.com can store on your computer might help. Completely deleting youtube.com from the list of visited websites might also help (since that might get rid of any corrupt data).

If that doesn't work you can also try deleting the flash player's cache files manually.

just delete all the folders out of:

/Users/[YOUR USER NAME]/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player/AssetCache

The folders should have names that look similar to "5PXNHG84" or "KK4Y5DSK".

Unfortunately, Flash for OS X (and linux) has never seemed to work as well as it does on windows. So what I just described still may not solve your problem, but it's worth a shot.
