MacOS – Why can’t the Mac Pro connect to an SMB share over the network

I have a really weird problem. I have a Raspberry Pi running an SMB server that shows up in the sidebar of the Finder. I usually can just click on it and connect. Just today, it stopped working and gives me the error "Connection Failed". It has worked fine in the past. I'm running OS 10.8.4 on a Mac Pro. Our MBP (also 10.8.4) connects just fine, no problems. I see log messages in Console.app as such:

9/10/13 7:14:43.869 PM com.apple.kextd[12]: Request from non-root process 'netbiosd' (euid 222) to load /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext - not allowed.

Essentially:

The operating system has lost its integrity

at least one bundle – the corecrypto.kext kernel extension – is missing
there's no explanation for the loss.

Can you be sure that all other parts of the OS are integral?

Recommendations

Verify the file system: use Disk Utility.

Verify the disk more thoroughly. For this you might use badblocks, or something like Drive Genius.

Use App Store to download the full OS X Mountain Lion installer for OS X 10.8.5.

Reinstall the OS.

You have to tell Spotlight to index the volume so you can find the files on it.

Open Terminal and issues the command:

sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/<name of the network_volume you want SL to index>

This command should work in every version of macOS from Snow Lion up to El Capitan

Share external FAT formatted drive over SMB in Mountain Lion

You don't have to manually edit a configuration file; it's possible to share drives via SMB using the Sharing control panel. Under the File Sharing service, hit the "Options..." button to enable SMB:

This will make your shared folders accessible via SMB to the specified users. It shouldn't matter what the source filesystem is (FAT, HFS, or other) as long as your Mac can access it.

If you don't see any contents from the client, make sure you've added your drive as a shared folder, and that you've given users the appropriate permissions.
