MacOS – When saving Open Office files they used to stay Open Office files, now they change to Terminal files

You could simply use MacVIM to handle this. When you install MacVIM it should give you an option to install the command line shortcuts.

Then, in your Terminal, simply use mvim instead of vi:

mvim /path/to/your/file.txt

Or, if you are super lazy, add this to your ~/.profile:

alias vi=mvim

This also allows you to associate text files with MacVIM in finder, so you always get the right application for your files, weather you open them in the GUI or not.

Run plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and add an entry like this under LSHandlers:

    <string>com.macromates.textmate</string>

You can also change the default application for normal files with no extension:

    <string>com.macromates.textmate</string>
</dict>

You can apply the changes by restarting. Just logging out and back in doesn't seem to work. You could also rebuild the Launch Services database, but it has the side-effect that the warnings about opening applications for the first time are shown again.

Another option is to add something like this to a duti configuration file:

com.macromates.textmate public.unix-executable all
com.macromates.textmate public.plain-text all
