I have macbook retina pro 2013 version with 16gb ram and OS X 10.9.3.
This machine works just fine, except just one problem. systemstats hits 100% CPU usage very frequently, at least 6 times a day.
I've cleaned up database file for my spotlight and tried many solutions from google search result.
What is this systemstats and why is it using 100% cpu? I've heard that it indexes something..but even so..does it have to use 100% cpu??
NOTE: This is only a partial answer, so any other info as to why this happened could be good for others with this problem.
Literally, upon simply plugging in the power cord, all symptoms immediately stopped. (Battery was well above 10%.)
Since upgrading to iTunes 11.3 I have experienced a very similar problem. Every time I refresh my podcasts, iTunes' memory/CPU usage surges, and the iTunes UI freezes up for 5-10 minutes.
I haven't found a complete solution, but I have stumbled across a temporary workaround. On my system, the problem only seems to occur when I refresh podcasts while looking at them in the List view, as in the screenshot below:
If instead I refresh podcasts from the All Unplayed view, there is no freezing at all:
It appears that the issue is related to viewing the podcast list while refreshing all podcasts. (You can even avoid the issue if you click refresh in List view and then quickly click away to another view, like Music.)
Not a super satisfying answer, I know, but for me it has returned iTunes to a semi-usable state.

systemstats profiles other processes. The information collected is used, for example, to populate the "Apps Using Significant Energy" section of the battery menu, and the Energy tab in Activity Monitor.
It is actively triggered by clicking on the battery menu, or opening Activity Monitor. You can find more information on how to disable it in this article.
