MacOS – the install logs for macOS bootable external installer

With the more recent macOS installers, using createinstallmedia to make bootable installers is widespread practice now.

When we take that drive to a Mac to erase it and install a clean OS – do the installer logs with any errors get saved to the external or internal disk or do we need to inspect/ save / send them to Apple before we quit the installer?

The macOS install log is always on the target drive in /var/log/install.log.

There is no reason that running it from the installer won't work. That's the way Apple intended the installation to run, so that is probably the safest way to perform the upgrade.

MacOS – Where does a pkg installer install things

You can check it from Terminal. Navigate to the folder where You have Your pkg file. Enter this:

mkdir Foo
cd Foo
xar -xf ../NAME_OF_YOUR.pkg
lsbom Bom

This will list files/paths which are included in this pkg.
