MacOS – Strange behavior of keyboard shortcuts

On my imac I have system Preferences -> hardware -> keyboard -> keyboard & text input set with a checkmark for move focus to menu bar with ^F2. It works.

On my (pretty new) macbook air, I set the same thing, and it doesn't work.

I have (Text boxes and lists only ) checked on both machines, but I seem to get the same result with all controls checked..

Both are os x version 10.8.4

On the other hand, Under mission control, when switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application WORKS for macbook air, but not for the iMac.

What am I missing? Anyone else have these kinds of problems?

Do you have this setting enabled?

If you don't, you can still use fn-control-F2 to move focus to the menu bar.

An ideal solution would be a single key press that is relatively intuitive and consistent with other keyboard interface rules. Nonetheless, I have found a couple of hacks that seems to work.

Cmd+[ then Cmd+]: This navigates back then forward. After this has occurred the focus is on the file list. A mild nuisance with this option is that the search is refreshed, which can lead to a brief lag.
Cmd+Shift+G followed by escape: This opens the go to folder dialog box; escape exits the dialog box and returns focus on the file list.

When I tried using Alfred to assign a keyboard shortcut for MacVim, pressing the shortcut did not always open a new window. You could try using a script like this though:

tell application "MacVim"
    reopen -- open a new default window if there are no open windows
    activate -- make frontmost
end tell

Or try just using activate app "MacVim" or adding different arguments to open -a MacVim.
