MacOS – Steam not installing in wine in 10.8

I have a problem with Wine and Steam on my Mac. I recently updated to 10.8. When I had Lion Wine and Steam worked perfectly, but because of some problems I had to re-install Wine. The thing is, now that Wine is re-installed, I can't install Steam. First off, when I run the installer the console shows:

fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented.

Then, after I start the installation and press the first next, the X11 window disappears and never re-opens (believe me, I left it for half an hour and nothing happens, not that it should take more than a few seconds, but still). X11 is still running, or rather XQuartz. What is wrong and what does fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented. mean?

How did you install Wine? When I installed Wine using Homebrew, it told me that it had problems with the new Apple llvm compiler, and said to use the old GCC compiler, and gave me a link to download and install it. I haven't tried to install Steam in Wine though, so I don't have experience with your specific problem.

I've found a completely horrendous but workable way of fixing my problem. First, download and install Afloat, which lets you set windows as global translucent non-clickable overlays.

Then, create a HTML file whose background switches between pure white and almost pure white 20 times a second. Something like this:

Finally, open this file in Safari, resize the window to fill the screen as much as possible, and use Afloat to set the window as a global near-transparent non-clickable overlay. The result? The whole screen (including the WINE window) is forced to update every 50 ms.

Is this completely horrible? Yes. But it works.

The difference may be related to whether you're using the Mac driver. Go to Set Screen Options, and check Use Mac Driver instead of X11. It's the top checkbox under "Other Options". Screenshot of Set Screen Options window

Otherwise, it's not clear how your installations are different. Because you're using Wineskin, however, you have a great alternative: Just copy the Wineskin app from your working computer to this one. That will carry along all of the settings and tweaks you have in your working copy. It's all self-contained!
