When downloading files in Safari you can see your current downloads in View -> Current Downloads or AltCommandL
If my memory serves me right, this window also showed the download speeds as well (this was in previous versions of Safari when it used to be a separate window). But I can not figure out how to bring up the downloads speeds.
My question: How can I see my current download speeds in Safari (version 6) without the use of any extensions of third party apps?
Actually, in Safari 6.x when the location bar has focus, ⌘+S brings up the export dialog to save the current page as an archive.
That's not what you want, however.
You want to download some component from a site like an mp3 or a Java jar that you know the path to, but there's no exposed link.
⌥+↩ (option-return) to the rescue. Edit the URL in the location bar and press ⌥+↩. It will magically transfer over to the download view, just like you used to be able to drag it.
I am a big fan of using Safari's built in Web Inspector for this sort of task.
Open Safari preferences, go to Advanced and tick the check to show the Develop menu in the menu bar.
Now you can refresh a page and see detailed information on the Timelines section to graph page load times, delays and whatever sequence of steps was needed to render the current page.
You can also use command line tools like curl in conjunction with the time command or using curl's internal timing options curl --trace-time to pick apart some of the files or scripts if you want to get a statistical level of repeatability as opposed to a broad overview of an entire page load.

After reading this thread and with the reproducibility described here, I started to believe that this is a bug. In this thread OS X users complain that sometimes download speed is visible and sometimes not. It was suggested to completely quit Safari, open terminal and execute:
And launch Safari again. That did not work for me.
