MacOS – “Show all” by default in Finder

My question is directly related to this question in LION version.

I use Icon view in Finder and I want to get rid of "Show all" behaviour, i.e. I want all files to be shown by default.

Now, I am on Mavs, but still have no way to expand all the items by default in icon view.

Can we view all files by default in icon view in OS X?

Go to the folder and press ⌘J, then set Arrange By to None. This will still sort using whatever you have chosen for Sort By. Click Use as Defaults to use this option as default and remove the .DS_Store from any folder that you wish to inherit these defaults.

I have a two-part answer for you. The short answer is no, you cannot "Show All" by default in the Icon view you are using.

The good news, and second part of the answer, is that you can change the folder View settings to eliminate this completely.

Open one of the folders with which you are having an issue.
Select Show View Options from the View menu.
Change the Arranged By setting to Name or None.
Then Select Sort By to whatever way you prefer. Kind will be the secondary arrangement.
You may also wish to check the box, Always open in Icon view.

Once this is set the way you wish, you can also click the Use as Default button at the bottom of the View options window.

MacOS – How to set a folder view as default for all folders in Finder

As bmike mentioned, the default settings are not used for folders that have folder-specific settings saved in a .DS_Store file. You can just delete .DS_Store files though:

sudo find / -name .DS_Store -delete; killall Finder
