When you click and hold the icon of a running application in the OS X dock you get a list of current app windows that you can pick from. The list of windows appears after some time interval. Is there a way to reduce this interval?

There is no easy way to do this, but there is a little hack :)
- Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/
- Backup DockMenus.plist
- Open DockMenus.plist in your favorite text editor with root access
Find section
finder-runningand add new sub-section<dict> <key>command</key> <integer>1004</integer> <key>name</key> <string>REMOVE_FROM_DOCK</string> </dict>or just Download my version of DockMenus.plist
In plist editor file should look like this:
Open Terminal and run
killall Dock.Right click on Finder icon in Dock - Bingo!
p.s After Dock restart (manual relaunch or mac reboot) you need manually remove Finder icon from Dock
Sounds like you just need to check "Minimize windows into application icon" in System Preferences → Dock.
The application will then get minimized into its own Dock icon and clicking it will restore it, exactly as you suggest (although the restore behaviour should also happen even if the icon is minimized into the right hand side of the Dock).

If your Mac has a trackpad, you can click with two fingers to bring up that menu without delay. If it has a Magic Mouse, you can click on the right side of the mouse. If it has a standard PC mouse, you can right click, and whatever hardware you have, you can also hold Control while clicking to do the same thing. This also brings up other context menus in all sorts of places in the system! Hope this helps.
