MacOS – Problems connecting to ethernet with El Capitan

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6. Recently I bought a USB-to-Ethernet adapter so that I could connect to Ethernet. It was working fine, but now it's not after a few days.

Now, I don't see the Ethernet option under "Network Preferences", and I tried resetting my NVRAM (as I've seen on some other suggestions online) but that didn't work.

Any clue as to how I should proceed?

As mentioned in the comment, try the adapter on a different machine to see if it's still functional.

Have you tried to add a new network device in the network settings pane? The USB adapter should show up there.

For reasons best known to itself, Apple chose not to include updated drivers for the A1277 adapter when it released Mavericks. In the screenshot you provided, the 'Product ID: 0x1402' in reference to your adapter reveals it was manufactured by ASIX Electronics, and further indicates that ASIX designates it internally as a model AX88772C. (This information comes from the massive OUI database of model and vendor codes maintained by the IEEE.)

Happily enough, even though Apple no longer continues to support the product, ASIX does. Their current driver version (2.2.0) for the A1277 / AX88772C includes support not only for Mavericks, but for Yosemite as well.

MacBook – Failing to connect to WiFi network with MacAuthEvent error

It might be your WiFi hardware, but you can test it using following steps to manualy onnect:

Manually connect to WiFi

Turn On

networksetup -setairportpower en0 on

Find

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airport scan

Connect

networksetup -setairportnetwork en0 WIFI_SSID_I_WANT_TO_JOIN WIFI_PASSWORD

If above does not work you have a deeper problem.

Before you go, try using the BSSID instead the network name.

airport -A=ssid -BSSID=bssidname -password=password

If you do not know the BSSID (who does), use this to find it:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airport -s

This will give you all SSID and BSSID in your scan range.
